Baby's breath and fern on thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against the outer thigh beside a delicate fine line design of baby's breath sprigs, a small seated figure and a short fern-like sprig. The linework is thin and mostly dark, with the floral stems running upwards from the knee area. The photograph is taken on a white bed with soft natural light, leaving the skin and tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Margaret,

The ferns have come up through the flagstones again, and I have decided to let them stay. You can tell Dad the rockery is his problem now, not mine. The cottage is quieter since Mrs Pell went, but her glasshouse still hums with the heater she never switched off, and the baby's breath in the long bed keeps coming up white as if nobody thought to tell it.
The little seated stone figure by the pond, the one the last owners left behind, has been losing her fingers to frost. I have been bringing her sprigs of dried baby's breath and tying them to her shoulders with green wool, because the wind keeps stripping them off the wall. Every morning I sit on the bench beside her for a few minutes before the kettle, and I cannot tell you how strange it is to be still in this garden at all.
Yesterday I found a tin in the potting shed, labelled in Mrs Pell's wobbling capitals: FOR WHOEVER SITS STILL. Inside were seed packets for ferns I had never seen, and a folded note saying they grow best where nobody is in a hurry. So I planted them along the foot of the wall and watered them with the can she left by the door.
This morning a wren landed on the figure's head and stayed long enough for me to count its feathers. I did not move. I think she would have liked that.
Love, Ruth
