The minibus gave up forty miles outside Sayle Wells, a town Megan had picked because it sounded like a cocktail. Nobody had mentioned that it was also a petrol pump, a shuttered motel and a bar called the Last Lemon. Donna kicked the front tyre as if it had personally insulted her, and eleven women in sashes watched the dust settle on the verge.

Megan climbed out last, tiara sliding over one eye, clutching a bag of pink plastic glasses. "Right," she said. "Nobody panic. We walk until someone's lost, then we buy them a drink." Priya groaned that it was the least funny thing Megan had ever said, which was a high bar, given the morning they'd had.

They had walked less than a mile along the shoulder when a pickup crawled up behind them. The driver leaned out with a road atlas open on his knee, upside down. He said he had been circling the same three junctions since Tuesday and his wife had stopped answering the phone around the time he started talking to cacti. Megan, who had never once in her life admitted to being lost, looked at him with real tenderness and told him he was coming with us.

At the Last Lemon, the barman set down two martinis, a pink one with a cherry for the stranger, and a jug of water that nobody touched. The man turned out to be the only one of us who knew exactly where he was. He gave us directions to a town none of us could pronounce. When the taxi finally came, Megan was writing the bar's name across the back of her hand in biro, so that whoever found her next would know where to bring the drinks.
