Baymax holding a cat on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon Baymax character sits on the forearm, cradling a sleepy orange and cream cat with closed eyes. Pink and purple hearts float above, and a tan banner across the bottom reads HAIRY BABY. Bold black outlines define the forms, with soft grey shading on the white body and warm colour on the cat.

Dear Nan, Mostly we're sailing through grey water and the cook has run out of anything sweet, so I am writing this on the back of a cargo manifest. You will want to know about the cat. She came aboard at Tilbury in a crate stencilled FRAGILE, which was the first lie of the voyage, and she has slept on the engine room hatch ever since. Nobody is allowed to move her.

The infirmary robot is the other lodger. Chief Okafor's nephew built it from spare parts and a sack of marshmallow foam, and it stands about as tall as a pillar box, white and round, with two black dot eyes and a nose like a button. It was meant to take our blood pressure. Instead it spent Tuesday night carrying that cat up and down the companionway, very slowly, the way you'd carry a sleeping baby, while the cat purred against its belly like a kettle coming to the boil.

Mr Dunning reckons it's gone soft. Maybe it has. But when the swell came up on Wednesday and the crate of tinned peaches went over, that robot was the first one down the stairs, and it didn't let go of the cat once. We've started calling her Hairy Baby, painted it on a strip of tin and nailed it above the galley door. The robot answers to the name as well, which I think is its way of saying it's proud of her.

We're due in Halifax in nine days, and I'll post this from there. Give Mum my love and tell her the cat has no idea she's famous now. Love, Ruby.
