Two dogs in a foliage wreath

Realism · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two dogs, possibly retrievers, with their heads turned in opposite directions and set within a circular wreath of leaves and small flowers. The linework is soft and the shading uses grey wash to give the fur and foliage a gentle, painterly depth. The design is centred on a plain background of pale skin, with the wreath filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The two retrievers came down to the market at Hollin Cross every Thursday, one on either side of the cart, and nobody in the town could remember which of them had been first. The rain that autumn did not stop for nine days, and the stalls sagged under their tarpaulins while the flower-seller, Mrs Abney, sold what she could from a bucket by the gate. She had a basket of late clematis and a few stems of rosemary, and she gave the dogs a crust each because they had stood so patiently in the wet.

On the tenth morning the dogs did not come. Mrs Abney packed up early and walked the lane toward the mill, the rosemary wrapped in brown paper under her arm. At the bend she found them sitting under a hawthorn, heads turned away from each other, one looking up the hill and one looking down toward the river, as though each were keeping watch for the other to come round.

She knelt in the mud and tied a sprig of rosemary to each collar. The dog facing the river lifted its head and looked at her, and then at the hill, and then at her again. It was the longest look she had ever been given by an animal, and she understood it without needing to be told. Neither would leave the spot unless the other could see them both.

She went home, came back with the cart and a heavy blanket, and sat with them until the rain thinned. When the sun came through the hawthorn, the two dogs stood up together and walked into town, side by side, and the market has never once since been held without a wreath of something green hung on the gate.
