Infinity symbol with paw prints and heart on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows a continuous infinity loop drawn in thin, even linework. Two solid black paw prints sit on the left side of the loop, and a small outlined heart hangs from the right side. The design is in black ink only and is centred on the wrist against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp on Scarth Head had failed twice that winter, and both times Tom Yeats had climbed the iron stairs alone in the dark. This time he took the dog. Bess had never been allowed past the second landing, but she followed him up one rung at a time, nails ticking on the cold treads, as though she understood the tower was counting something.

The fault was in the drive chain. A link had worked loose and was looping round the clockwork gear, so the great lens stuttered instead of turning. Tom knelt on the lantern floor with a spanner in one hand and a torch in his teeth, feeling for the break. Grease had settled on the landing below, and when he looked down he saw the prints there: Bess's paws, pressed neatly into the black, going up to where he knelt and then curling back round the spiral towards the door, then up again, the same route over and over, as though she had been walking a circle to keep him company.

He fixed the link before the tide turned. The lens found its rhythm, and the beam swept out over the Sound, across the lobster pots and the dark hull of the Margaret Ann, and came back round to the headland. Each pass took the same time it always had.

By the time he came down, the sky was grey over the water. Bess was waiting at the foot of the stairs, tail going, and in the salt drying on the step beside her were his own boot prints, lying exactly over hers, as if the two of them had gone round the tower together all night.
