Black bow tattoos on thighs
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the legs of a person in a pale grey pleated skirt, with a solid black bow tattoo on each upper thigh above the knee. Each bow has bold, filled shapes and two long trailing ribbon tails, and the ink appears uniformly dark with no shading. The background is softly blurred and the muted, warm tones keep the focus on the tattoos.

The grosgrain came off the bolt on a Thursday, and you measured it twice, because Mrs Hollis had taught you that a bow forgives nothing. She stood at the counter with her reading glasses on a chain, watching your fingers the way she watched a buttonhole, and told you the loops must match or the eye would catch the difference before the hand did.

Most of the orders came from the Methodist hall. Dance nights, christenings, a wedding where the bride wanted tails so long they had to be pinned up at the back. You learned to cut those on the bias so they fell without sulking, and to lay the knot a thumb's width off true. The black was for funerals and sixth-form balls alike, she said, and nobody ever asked which one they were buying.
In March she didn't come down the stairs. You found the tin under the counter with your name on the lid in her capitals, and inside, folded in tissue, a single bow in black ribbon gone soft as felt. The loops were uneven by a hair. She must have tied it the year you started, and she never said it was for you.
You unpicked nothing. You put the kettle on and tied the first of the new orders in the same uneven way, because it was hers, and because it held.
