Black cat and LUCKY lettering on ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A bold black cat with an arched back and yellow eyes is tattooed on the ankle, with red shading behind its back. Two small bats sit above it, and the word LUCKY in black script lettering runs beneath it with crossed bones at the base. The main image is a close-up of the tattoo, and the left side of the collage shows the same ankle in a studded flat beside a cat.

Snow had shut the pass for nine days when the carter Tobiah Wenn came stamping into the Crooked Hart with his hat full of ice. Mistress Orla set a bowl of barley broth in front of him and asked no questions, since the road had none worth answering. Her black cat sat on the settle with her back up and her yellow eyes fixed on his canvas bag.

The cat had come to the inn the winter the well froze, a scrap of a thing that walked in off the drifts and never walked out again. At dusk the bats from the eaves dropped down to circle her, and Orla said that was the only reason the roof had stood through three storms. Nobody argued. The Crooked Hart had never once been empty when the snow was deep.
When Tobiah reached for his bag, the cat rose up tall and stiff, spat, and came down stiff-legged across the floorboards. She leapt onto the bag and would not be moved. Orla lifted her off twice, and twice she went back, until the carter opened the drawstring himself to show a box of pewter spoons, prised from a chapel in the valley that had burned in the autumn.
The thaw came in the night. In the morning Tobiah's cart was gone from the yard and his tracks ran down the pass toward the valley. Orla sent the spoons after him with a boy on a pony and a note saying where they had come from. The cat slept on the warm flags of the hearth, red firelight running along her arched back, and Orla went on calling her Lucky, though she never once said why.
