Tomas had been walking the goat track above Vell for three hours when the snow began to hiss sideways, and he was ready to lie down in a drift and call it sensible. Then a black cat sat on a boulder ahead of him, pointed ears flat to the wind, and looked back over its shoulder as though it had been waiting for him to catch up.

He knew the cat was not really a cat. Everyone in the valley knew the cat of the high pass belonged to the lighthouse keeper's widow, who had died the winter before with the lamp still lit. Cats did not have eyes that bright. He followed anyway, because the alternative was the drift. The cat trotted a few paces, stopped, and waited, its tail curling into a question mark in the snow that never quite touched the ground.

The track narrowed to a ledge with nothing beneath it but grey cloud. Tomas's boots skidded and he grabbed at a rope that was not there. The cat leapt onto his chest, light as a dropped glove, and pressed one paw against the small silver heart at his throat, the one his sister had given him before he left. The paw was cold, then warm. The cloud parted like a curtain, and the village lights lay below, close enough to count.

When he reached the inn at dawn, the innkeeper poured him a brandy and asked who he had been talking to. Tomas said nobody. He looked back at the pass, where the snow had already swallowed the tracks, and found on the bench beside him a single paw print, black as ink, with a curl of tail drawn neatly after it.
