Black cat with crescent moon wand on thigh
Other · Mixed · Photo
A solid black cat with large eyes and a crescent moon on its forehead sits in front of a star inside a circle, with a crescent moon wand crossing the right side. Bold outlines and solid black fill are used for the cat and the emblem, with a few small blue dot motifs scattered behind. The composition is centred on the thigh, and the ink is mostly black with light blue accents.

Dear Ines,

The cat turned up again on Tuesday, sitting on the airlock of Hollin Deep as if she had paid the docking fee. Black as a coal sack, with a little silver crescent stamped above her eyes, and those eyes so round the crew swear she sees a hull breach before the sensors do. Nobody owns her. Teodor thinks she came up from the ice farms in the cargo of a dead freighter, and I believe him, because she walks the spine of the station like she is counting rivets.
Last week the seal on Bay Four failed and the pressure alarm screamed for twenty minutes before anyone found the valve. I was the only one close by, halfway through a bad coffee, and the cat was there before me, pacing the star-ring painted on the bulkhead. Her tail was up. She went round the circle touching each of the five points with her nose, and when I came near she hissed and sat square over the centre. I laid my palm flat on the metal beside her and felt the hum change. The valve was there, under the paint, exactly where her paw had been.
I still do not know who painted that ring, or why the crescent wand hangs clipped to the maintenance rack beside it, its silver tip worn bright from being turned. Maybe nobody meant anything by it. Maybe that is the point.
Anyway, I have left a saucer of milk by the hatch. Come up at Harvest and see for yourself. Bring the good tea.
Love, Marit
