Matching infinity tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are hooked together at the little fingers, and each shows a small black infinity symbol tattooed on a finger. The linework is thin and even with solid black ink, and both tattoos are the same size and sit at a similar position. Silver rings are worn on the adjacent fingers, and the soft, warm background is blurred.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire only warms the front benches. The Pellegrini Travelling Big Top had been dying for eleven winters by the time the Marsh sisters came to it, and the cook swore it was the one thing in the show that never missed its cue. Ada and Nell had learned to fly on the same rickety trapeze in a field outside Hull, and they had a habit nobody else understood. Before every climb they hooked their little fingers together, like children swearing on a penny, and only let go once their hands had found the bar.

The winter the canvas split over the ring, the owner sold the ponies and kept the lamps. Money ran thin as tea. A man from a London agency turned up one frosty evening in a camel coat, watched them fly from the back of the stalls, and offered a contract to the younger one only. He said the elder would drag her down and Ada should be honest about it. Nell said nothing. She climbed the ladder that night and hung in the dark, waiting for a spotlight that had gone out an hour before.
Ada walked into the agency man's lodgings with frost on her boots. She told him Nell's name would go on the bill first or neither of them would sign. He laughed until he saw her face, then he wrote it in his own hand, and the sisters went back to the wet sawdust and the cold cups of cocoa.
So the story goes, they flew one last night in that tent, fingers hooked as always, and when they let go at the top the lamps came on by themselves. Whether that was the wiring or the sisters, the cook never would say, but he always swore the joins on their hands were the only things in the place still holding true.
