Black linework tattoo on a raised forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist is raised at the top of the frame, with a forearm running down the image. The forearm carries a black linework tattoo of a vertical line, several rings and circles, and curved shapes that look mechanical or abstract, with a larger curved band across the lower part of the forearm. The photograph is in black and white against a plain textured wall, so the ink appears solid black with no shading or colour.

Dennis had been promised that the lift on the ninth floor of Coldharbour House would be running by Friday, and it was Thursday night when he finally got the hatch off the motor room. Grease, a torch wedged between his teeth, the smell of hot copper. Above him the cable ran up the shaft like a plumb line into the dark.

Nadia from flat 904 stood on the landing holding a flask and a list of complaints. She wanted to know whether it was true the block had been designed by a man who had never once ridden its lifts. Dennis said he had no idea who designed it, only who would have to climb it. He ran his thumb over the governor wheel, the big ring with its single notch, and the pulley that had been turning the wrong way since March.
The fault was a sheared pin, nothing grand. The spare was in his van, which was the trouble, because the van was parked on the far side of the estate and the car park gate locked at eleven. Nadia offered to hold the torch. She kept it steady, the beam resting on the drum like a spotlight on a stage, while he worked the new pin in by feel and the old counterweights swung slowly overhead.
When the car finally groaned up from the basement it stopped at nine with its doors open onto the orange glow of the stairwell. Nadia stepped in first and pressed the button marked R. "Go on then," she said. "Show me this view you keep promising." The car rose past the lit windows one floor at a time, and Dennis watched the city come up behind the railings like rings sliding up a line.
