Fine line black tattoo of a cartoon dog with a bow and a letter S on its chest, on the inner wrist.

Cartoon dog with bow on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a fluffy cartoon dog with a bow on its head, sitting with its tail curled up. The letter S sits on a heart-shaped marking on its chest. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading, and the design is centred on the inner wrist against a plain pale background.

Now sit down, you lot, and mind the cake, because this is the tale of Bramble, the fluffiest dog in Hollin Cross, and the wedding that nearly ended before the vows. Bramble had a bow on her head the size of a dinner plate, a curl of tail like a question mark, and a heart on her chest with a letter S in it, which she had been given by a girl called Sadie Ockenden who ran the bakery and who was, as it happened, marrying the postman that very Saturday.

On the morning of the wedding, Bramble trotted off with the rings tied to her collar in a ribbon. Nobody had asked her to carry them. She had simply decided, the way dogs do when they have a plan and no intention of telling you it. Down past the church gate she went, over the stile, through the hawthorn, and straight into the duck pond, where she sat down in the middle of a flotilla of very offended ducks and refused to come out until someone produced a sausage roll.

The vicar tried. The postman tried, in his best wedding shoes, which were not made for ponds. Sadie stood on the bank with her veil blowing sideways and her face going from white to red and back again. Then old Mr Greave from the allotments stepped forward, held out a sausage roll, and said, quite calmly, 'She only wants to be asked properly.' So Sadie knelt in the mud in her dress, held out her hand, and said, 'Bramble, please.' And the dog came out, shook herself over the entire village, and dropped the rings right into her palm.

They still say the ducks never forgave anyone. And that the rings were polished on the bow for luck, which is why the S on the heart has gone a bit shiny. Anyway, pass the cake along, and mind the ducks on your way home.
