Blue script quote on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo is a two-line handwritten script quote in blue ink, set across the skin of an arm. The linework is smooth and even, with the letters joined in a flowing cursive style and slightly uneven spacing. The composition is a close, slightly angled photo against a patterned fabric on the left and a speckled surface below.

The Ardent Rooms on Mercer Street had a floor so well waxed that a dropped glove would slide clean to the bandstand, and nobody in Thornley had ever seen Miss Agnes Pell lose her footing on it. I was nineteen that spring and came in on Thursdays mostly to watch her. She wore grey crepe that rustled like a warning, and she moved between the couples the way a clerk runs a ledger, catching every error before anyone else noticed the column was wrong.

The night the trumpeter slipped off the bandstand with his instrument still at his lips, the whole room gasped except her. She crossed to the edge, looked down over her spectacles and told the saxophonist to carry the tune until the poor man could sit up. Then she sent a boy for brandy and a damp cloth. Mrs Dunn from the cloakroom said afterwards that Agnes would certainly be a fearsome thing to behold when crossed, and I believed her, because I had seen the gentleman who tried to cut in on her waltz retreat without his hat.
In October I finally asked her to dance. She looked at my hand as if it were a receipt she had not authorised, then took a stub of blue chalk from her reticule and drew a neat cross on the floor beside her shoe. "Count three and stand on that," she said. "Anything else is decoration." We danced one slow foxtrot, and I never once trod on her toes.
When the hall emptied, I stayed to sweep. Under the lamps I found her chalk marks scattered across the boards, dozens of small crosses where she had shown the young ones where to put their feet, and beside them a single pair of footprints in the dust, pressed hard, as though she had lingered. I stood on one of them and felt, for once, that I had got the steps right.
