Bold black crown-like tattoo on skin
Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a solid black tattoo of a fluted base with spiked points along the top, similar to a crown or cupcake case. A thick wavy line rises from the upper left and a curved hook sits on the right, both in heavy black linework. The image is a close, straight-on crop with the design filling most of the frame against plain skin tones.

They had to take the crown down before the bank men came, because Mr Oddy said a cap of black iron that size would fetch more for scrap than the whole season had earned. Nobody argued. The crown sat on the top of the centre pole, fluted like the rim of a paper case, its points spiking the sky, and every child in three counties had been told it was the only thing holding the big top up on a windy night.

Sal Gorringe climbed the pole herself on the last Saturday of October, with a hacksaw strapped to her belt and a flask of cold tea. The fairground was empty except for the cookhouse smoke, which rose straight and then bent away over the hedge like a river turning round a stone. She sat on the iron rim with her boots dangling and watched the lamps go out one by one in the caravans below.
Her grandfather had always said the crown was made from a horseshoe nail, a fishing hook and the brass weight of a pawnbroker's scale, and that none of it would stay up unless something up there was willing to hold it. So when the moon came over the bean field, thin and curved like a hook, Sal put the saw down and waited to see what it would do. It did nothing at all. It just hung there, the way it always had, on the end of a line nobody could see.
In the morning she told the scrapman the crown had rusted through and fallen in the night, and he looked at the pole for a long time before he believed her. The tent stood another winter. The smoke still rises from the cookhouse on still evenings, and the moon still comes over the field on its own.
