A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The customs house at Harrow Ford had one rule that no minister had ever managed to change. Every traveller, rich or ragged, had to stand still while the officer, a broad man called Osric Penhale, reached over the counter and tapped the tip of their nose with one finger. Only then did he say the word, and only after that did he look at their papers. Clerks came and went. The rule stayed.

One wet March a girl came down the north road with a goat on a rope and no papers at all. She had lost them in the river, she said, along with her mother's shawl and most of her patience. The guards wanted to send her back to the mill. Osric looked at the goat, which was staring at him with great dignity, and then at the girl, who was trying very hard not to cry.

He leaned over the counter. 'Stand still,' he said. She stood still. He tapped her nose. 'Boop,' he said, and the goat bleated, and the girl laughed so suddenly she had to sit down on a barrel. Osric wrote something on the back of an old ledger page and pressed his round brass stamp beside it. It left a neat little dot and nothing more.

The guards wrote to the capital to complain. The capital wrote back that the rule concerned the nose and not the papers, and that the stamp was to be kept. So the dot still goes on every crossing paper at Harrow Ford, and travellers who ask about it are told only that the old officer was a patient man who liked a good full stop at the end of a sentence.
