Camel silhouette on a toe
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a camel in profile sits on the side of the big toe, standing with its head raised. The design is a flat fill with no visible shading or internal linework. The background is the rest of the bare foot and the other toes, in soft skin tones, with the photo framed close around the tattoo.

Mr Ottoline had sold the camel to the fair on a handshake, and for eleven summers it walked the same circuit of the Skegness sea front, head held high above the tourists, chewing on nothing in particular. Ada, who swept the booths at dawn, thought it looked like it was waiting for a train that had stopped running years ago.

Then the fair folded in a wet September and the camel was left in a paddock behind the chip shop with a bucket of carrots and a pair of boots nobody claimed. Ada brought it bruised apples from the greengrocer's crates and talked to it about her brother's boat, which had gone out past the groyne the week before and not come back. The camel listened the way a neighbour listens, ears turned, with no opinion.
On the third morning the tide had pulled so far back that the sand ran grey to the horizon, and the camel stood at the paddock gate looking east. Ada lifted the latch because it seemed rude not to. It walked out onto the flats without hurrying, placing each foot as if the sand had been laid specially for it, and she followed as far as the last groyne.
Out at the tideline a dark hull lay on its side, and a man in a yellow oilskin was waving both arms. The camel reached him first. Ada never learned how it managed the mud. She only saw that when the boat was floated free and the crew came in with raw hands, the camel was the one still standing out on the flats, head raised, watching the water as though it had carried them home itself.
