Campbell's soup can on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of a Campbell's Tomato Soup can wraps around the upper arm of a person wearing a white t-shirt. The can has a green lid, a red upper label with the brand name in script, a grey lower band reading TOMATO SOUP, and a small round emblem. Smooth, solid colour fills and clean black outlines give it a flat, graphic look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the reunion could say who had carried the tin into the hall, only that it sat on the trestle table between the urn and the raffle bucket from half past seven. It had a green lid, a red shoulder and a grey band with letters across it, the kind of tin a kitchen cupboard keeps for bad winters. Mrs Pargeter, who had taught them all geography and never once let anyone leave early, picked it up, turned it slowly, and said it was the only thing in the room that had not changed.

Sixteen years before, the year they left Haddon Road, she had set them a project on labels. Each child was to paint a tin from the corner shop in whatever colours they liked, and then write what they would put inside it if the world ended on a Tuesday. Dessart Coyle painted his grey so dully that she made him start again, and he did, and he wrote only one line on the card: keep this until we come back. She took the tins home. She kept them all, the way she kept everything.

Now the tin was open on the table, and Mrs Pargeter had a tin opener in her handbag that she had never once used on anything but tins. Folded small inside was a card in Dessart's handwriting, gone brown at the edges. It said he was sorry he had been late for everything, and that the soup was for whoever was hungry first.

They ate it cold from paper cups. Somebody laughed, somebody cried, and the lid went on the windowsill where the car park lights caught the green of it all night.
