Vampizza pizza slice with bat wings
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon pizza slice with a smiling face, two fangs, pepperoni and mushroom toppings sits between two black bat wings. The word VAMPIZZA is written in black capitals above it, with a thin yellow swoosh running behind the letters. Bold black outlines and flat, warm colour fills give the piece a traditional look, against a close crop of skin.

The drone pilots on Mezzanine Row still call me Vampizza, which is unfair, because I have only ever bitten one man and he had it coming. Mostly I run a hatch in the wall of the Sunken Market, where the night shift eats standing up. My oven is older than the moon colony. It runs on cooking oil from the hydroponic farms and pure spite.

Last Tuesday a courier named Odile hammered on the hatch at two in the morning, soaked through, clutching a sealed box with the wrong postcode. Inside was a pinch of real wheat in a mineral glass vial, stamped with a tax seal from before the Drowning. Somebody wanted my slice tested against the old recipe, and Odile wanted me to make it. I told her dough needs six hours to rest, and that vampires have all the time in the world, which was a lie we both enjoyed.
I cut the pepperoni the colour of a stop sign and sliced two mushrooms thin enough to read through. When the peel slid into the oven, the cheese bubbled into a face, the way it always does if you wait long enough. Odile laughed until she coughed. The inspector in the grey coat did not laugh. He took one bite, went pale as sour milk, and asked whether the fangs were part of the recipe.
I told him the fangs were just the crust, pinched sharp at the corners, and any fool could manage that. He wrote something down and asked for a second slice. He paid in ration chits, folded the box into his coat, and left with his shoulders looser than when he came in. The cheese face was still grinning at me from the rack, and I swear it winked.
