Pepperoni pizza slice with leaves on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pizza slice with red pepperoni circles, a brown crust and dripping yellow cheese sits above a cluster of teal green leaves and a small yellow centred bloom. The design uses bold black outlines and flat, solid fills with slight speckled shading on the crust. The colour palette is bright and limited to orange, yellow, red, brown and green against the skin tone.

The oven at the back of the big top had belonged to Mrs Pargeter's late husband, and it ran hot on one side and cold on the other, so every pizza I made for the Marvello Brothers came out with a bald patch. Nobody complained. Nobody complained about anything by the autumn of the third bad season, when the elephants were sold to a farm in Lincolnshire and the lion tamer had taken a job selling conservatories.

Dennis the strongman ate four slices before the matinee and said the cheese tasted like the old days. I had bought the pepperoni from a butcher in Hull who threw in a bag of bruised tomatoes for nothing, and I laid the red coins out in rings the way Nan used to on Sundays. The cheese slid off the crust and dripped onto the sawdust, and Dennis said that was the best bit.

On the last night the ringmaster, Gordon Vail, climbed the centre pole and refused to come down until someone brought him a bloom from the flower tins by the caravans, which we had planted years ago and never once watered. I took him a slice instead, folded in half and dripping. He ate it up there, slowly, with the lights going out one at a time.

Next morning the trucks left without us. I found the little yellow flower still growing in its tin on the empty lot, its leaves going green again in the rain, and I thought about asking for the oven back. I didn't. I got on the coach with the tin under my arm and a bag of pepperoni in my coat, and by the time we reached Doncaster I was already planning the next menu.
