Camper van tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small camper van is tattooed on the inner wrist, drawn in black outline with a red fill and a black peace sign on the front of the vehicle. The linework is clean and simple, with flat colour and no visible shading. Two gold bangles sit just below the tattoo, and red nail polish is visible at the top of the frame against a plain light background.

Dear Marguerite, the van finally gave up outside Rennes, right where the hedges turn to poplars and the sky goes that washed-out blue you only get in June. Dad says it was the fan belt. Dad says a lot of things when he's holding a spanner and the bonnet is steaming like a kettle. We have been sitting on a grassy verge for two days now, and I have counted every lorry that passes, one hundred and twelve if you're asking, most of them honking at the red and white paint like it owes them money.

The man from the garage in Pacé had a dog called Biscuit who slept in the passenger seat of his own tow truck. He said the van was older than his mother and twice as stubborn, and he fixed it for twenty euros and a jar of my jam. Dad wanted to pay him more. The man wouldn't take it. He just tapped the little peace sign painted on the nose and said, that's the only thing that matters on a bus like this, everything else is just a promise to keep going.
So we're going on Thursday. Mum has packed the sandwiches in greaseproof paper, the map is folded to the coast, and I have made a wish on the petrol cap the way you taught me, though I won't tell you what it was in case it doesn't come true. Write back to the campsite at Carnac. Tell me whether the sea is as grey there as you said, and whether the ferry still smells of diesel and oranges.
