Carpe Diem script tattoo on the foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a bare foot in a peach stiletto pump, with dark trousers at the ankle and a white bed sheet behind. The words Carpe Diem are written in thin, slightly uneven black script across the top of the foot, with fine, clean linework. The muted peach shoe and soft white background keep the focus on the small black lettering.

Sit yourself down there, where the wall keeps the wind off, and I'll tell you about Mabel Cropper and the shoes. Her father made boots in Halifax for forty years, and when the mill girls started asking for something lighter, he sent her to the market at Leeds to copy a pair from a shop window. She came home with leather bought off a cart and a grin you could have hung washing on.

She cut the uppers in peach kid, because she said apricot was the only colour that never looked apologetic. Her father said no sensible woman would walk to chapel in a heel as thin as a knitting needle. Mabel told him chapel was not where she was going. Every evening after the shop shut she sat under the bench lamp stitching, and every evening the carnation bed by the back gate grew a little wilder, because she forgot to water it.
On the Saturday before the Whit fair she finished the last pair, pressed a scrap of tissue inside, and wrote on the lining in pencil the two words the schoolmaster used to chalk above the door: carpe diem. Then she put them on, walked out past the gate, and didn't come back to the shop for a week.
Her father found the shoes set side by side on the garden wall, the pencilled words turned up to the sky, and the rose bed in full flower for the first time in years. He never said what she had done that week. He only ever said she had cut the best shoe in Yorkshire and then had the sense to leave it out in the sun.
