Carrot through a heart with VEGAN banner

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A red heart with a yellow banner reading VEGAN sits across the centre, with an orange carrot and green leaves piercing through its top. Bold black outlines, solid red and orange fills, and small teal and green accents define the design, with drips at the heart's tip. The tattoo is photographed close up on a lower leg against a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dora Pickering had grown the same carrot for eleven years and lost to the Haworth Gardeners' Show every time, so when the judge's card came back with "woody" written beside her entry, she said nothing. She carried the empty crate home up Bank Row in the drizzle, past the pit wheel that had stopped turning before her husband was born and the chapel that now sold sourdough.

Her grandson Callum found her at the kitchen table at nine that night with a bag of beetroot, a tin of red gloss from the gate, and a pair of snips. "You're not going to stab the judge," he said. "Not yet," said Dora. She had a better plan, and it involved the stencil she'd cut for the church fête, a heart the size of a dinner plate, and a carrot she had been saving under sacking since March.

They worked until the kettle went cold. The heart went up on the shed wall, the carrot went through the top of it like a spear, and Callum painted the banner in yellow with a word he'd been told not to write on anything in the village. Dora stood back, wiped her hands on her apron and told him the carrot was too pretty to eat.

In August, the judge came round the allotments with his clipboard. He stopped at the shed, looked at the heart for a long time, and then reached over the fence and pulled a leaf off Dora's real crop. He chewed it thoughtfully. The next morning a card sat beside her entry on the show table, in neat blue ink: "Best in show. Tell me the secret." Dora never did.
