Cartoon bears on the ribs

Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A brown bear with its mouth wide open and dark fur arms is placed above a tan teddy bear with a fanged, open-mouthed face, and the teddy bear's dark fur arms reach up over its head. The design uses bold black outlines with smooth, flat fills and soft shading on the fur. The tattoo is shown in colour on bare skin along the side of the torso, with a navel piercing visible at the left edge.

Dear Ada,

You will laugh at me, but Tom has finally stopped crying about the dark on the back lane, and the reason is that Bartholomew now has fangs. Mam sewed them on out of two white buttons and a length of bone-coloured thread, because the dog had chewed his muzzle off in the spring. Tom says a bear with teeth can see off anything that comes up the stairs, and I have not had the heart to tell him the only thing that ever comes up the stairs is Dad, smelling of the pit and wanting his tea.

The big brown one came from Mr Cowey's fair at Easter, the one that roars when you squeeze its paws. Tom won it by knocking three tins off a wall with a wooden ball, which Mr Cowey swore was luck and Dad swore was cheating. Tom will not let it near Bartholomew, but he keeps them on the chair by the window, facing each other, and every night he sets them to guard the coal scuttle. Last Tuesday the brown bear was found on the landing with its arms flung up over its head, and Tom swore the teddy had shoved it there in a fight.

Nobody believes me, but I think they have sorted it out between them. The teddy goes out in front, and the roaring bear waits behind with its great paws ready, which is more sense than most of the men on shift manage. Mam says it is a daft game. I think it is the only sensible arrangement anyone in this house has come to since the strike ended.

Write back soon and tell me if there is a shop in Newcastle selling button eyes. Tom wants a spare set for the brown one, and he has asked me to say it is only for emergencies.

Your loving sister, Nell
