Cartoon black cat and paw prints on foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon black cat with large round eyes and a long curled tail sits beside a trail of three small paw prints on the top of a foot. The script word Sammy runs along the lower right in a flowing hand-lettered style. The cat is filled in solid black with white highlights left in the eyes, and the lettering and paw prints are also solid black on pale skin.

The paw prints began at the fish market, crossed the wet cobbles, went straight through a puddle of spilt red paint, and stopped dead outside the chandler's on Quay Street. Nell Pascoe stood over them with a bucket of lamp oil and a face like weather coming in. Three prints, a gap, then three more, as if whatever made them had paused to consider its next move.

Sammy had come ashore in Porthmellow the spring the Gull Hope went down off the point, carried up the slipway in a lobster pot by a boy who swore the animal had walked out of the sea. Nobody believed him. Sammy did not look like a sea cat. He looked like something drawn by a child given too much black ink and a long wet afternoon, with eyes so round and startled that the harbourmaster had once apologised to him for the fright.
Nell followed the trail round the back of the shop and found Sammy on the step, tail curled neatly round his feet, looking pleased with himself. A brass fitting sat between his paws, dull with salt, and she knew it at once. It was the cleat from the Gull Hope's salvage, the one the insurers had been writing to her about for a month. She crouched down. "Where did you find that?"
Sammy nudged the fitting towards her boot, then rose and set off down the lane without looking back, leaving a fresh line of small black prints across her clean step. Nell watched him go, the tail a question mark against the grey harbour. She put the cleat in her apron pocket and decided, after some thought, that the insurers could wait until morning. A cat who could find lost brass deserved a fish head and a dry bed, and she suspected the trail, if she bothered to follow it, went further than the sea wall.
