Jam and peanut butter toast characters

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

Two cartoon toast slices sit side by side, each with a simple smiling face. The left slice is filled with bumpy purple jam and the right with golden peanut butter, both outlined in bold black linework with soft shading. Small pink radiating lines sit above the slices and black shadows sit beneath them on pale skin.

Sit down, sit down, the big top's only got the one pole left and I'll not have you standing under it. You want the Bramble and Hector act, or you want the elephant again? Thought so. Picture the last night of the season in Hull, rain coming sideways through the canvas, and two slices of bread lying on a plate in the wings, the sort the cook toasts for the strongmen at breakfast.

Bramble was the jam one, purple as a bruise and lumpy with pride. Hector was the peanut butter, golden and quiet, the only act who never once missed his mark. They'd been a double act for nineteen years, and every night they did the same trick. The spotlight found them, a little burst of pink lines flashed down from the rigging, and they leaned in towards each other, close enough to feel the warmth, then stopped a finger's width short. The crowd adored it. Nobody ever asked why they never quite touched.

Then the owner sold the lights to a bingo hall in Doncaster and the tent came down in March. Bramble and Hector were packed into a biscuit tin with the sawdust and the sequins, and the lid was pressed shut for a whole winter. Bramble swore every night through the tin that they'd close the gap the moment the lid lifted. Hector said nothing, which was his way.

Come spring the tin was opened by a girl called Ruth, who wanted a snack. There they were, flat and sticky, pressed together at last. Ruth ate the lot in one go, which I have always thought a very poor ending for a love story. Mind your step on the way out.
