Cartoon cat sheriff with revolver
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat character wearing a brown wide-brimmed sheriff hat with a yellow star badge and a matching olive uniform with a star badge. It holds a grey revolver in one hand and has stubble-like dots on its face. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat yellow, brown, olive and grey fills and soft shading on the skin-tone face and arms against a pinkish skin background.

Dear Aunt Pearl,

You will be pleased to hear that the gulls of Saltcombe Quay have been brought to heel, or at least to the far end of the breakwater, which I am told counts as heel in the harbour trade. I have been sheriff for nine days now. The badge is a tin star that Mr Abernethy the chandler polished until it hurt to look at, and the revolver is a dreadful old thing with a grey barrel that came with the office and has never once been loaded. I keep it in the drawer with the tide tables and point it at things when I want to be taken seriously.
The trouble began with a gull called Ezra Crake, who has been lifting pasties off the Tuesday market stall for three summers and sits on the net drying racks laughing at the fishwives. I gave him fair warning. He ignored it. So I walked the length of the quay in my good hat, stubble coming in on my chin because a sheriff ought to look weathered, and I found him on the mast of the Dorcas Ann, wearing a pasty like a bonnet.
I drew the revolver. Ezra looked at it, looked at me, and very slowly put the pasty down. Then Mrs Hollis from the fish stall began to clap, and the whole harbour joined in, and I stood there with my arm out straight and realised the gun was empty and everyone knew it except, for a moment, me.
Yesterday he came back and sat on the bollard beside my office door, perfectly civil. I have made him deputy. He has no badge, but he has given up the pasties, which is more than the Pardew brothers ever managed.
Your loving niece, Sheriff Rosie Thimble
