Cartoon cat with pink bow on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon white cat sits upright with a pink bow on its head and a red bow at its neck, with blue eyes and a black outline. The linework is clean and bold, with flat fills of pink, red and blue and little or no shading. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a dark background, with a floral ribbon tied at the wrist beside it.

Dear Nell,

You will not believe what the bosun has done. Sunday morning he came down to the galley with a parcel from Valparaíso wrapped in brown paper, and inside was a white kitten with a face like a clever pudding. Cook had already said no cats, not after the rat business in the Bay of Biscay, but the kitten sat on the flour sacks and looked at him with blue eyes as if he owned the ship, and Cook gave in before the second biscuit.

She has been named Marigold, though the lads call her Her Ladyship. She will not eat fish, only the cream off the custard, and she sleeps in the pot drawer with a pink ribbon tied round her head that Mrs Pryce's girl gave her in Liverpool. The red bow at her neck came off a Christmas parcel. Every morning she sits on the scrubbed table, tidies her whiskers and stares at the door as though the captain is late for his own inspection.

Last Tuesday the galley caught fire, just a tea towel on the hob, nothing grand. Everyone ran about shouting, the steward dropped the kettle, and I was halfway to the hatch with a bucket when I saw her, sitting bolt upright on the rail of the stove, bows perfect, not a whisker out of place. She didn't so much as blink. I threw the bucket myself and told Cook I'd done it.

So if you ask why the ship smells of custard and burnt toast, that's why, and I'm not sorry. Write soon and tell Mam I've been eating properly.

Love, Dot
