Mrs Okonedo's galley stove had been cold since Tuesday, and the cub had eaten the last of the ship's biscuits out of the tin before anyone thought to shut the lid. It was a white tiger, no bigger than a loaf, and it had come aboard at Port Said in a fish crate with a bough of cherry in its teeth. Nobody knew how a cub got onto a cargo ship. The bosun said it had swum. The cook said it had been sent.

The cub would not give up the branch. It sat on the flour sacks with the bare twig clamped in its jaws, blue eyes wide, and when the men tried to take it the twig went straight back to its mouth, as if it had been told to keep it. Pink blossom drifted off the wood and settled on the rigging, on the lamp, in the bread dough, though there was no blossom anywhere else for a thousand miles.

On the ninth night the cook sat up with it. She told it what her grandmother had told her: that a branch carried in the mouth from the place you were born would take you home, provided you never let it touch the sea. The cub listened with its head on one side. Then it jumped down, padded the length of the galley, and laid the twig in the hatch beside the sea-chest.

In the morning there was no cub, only a scatter of petals on the boards and the twig, rooted now, green at one end, growing up through the deck where the drain met the hull. The cook pressed her palm against the bark and felt the warmth of a small animal, then the cold of the water underneath.
