Cartoon character with striped hat behind ear
Neck · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a cartoon figure's head, with round glasses, a smile and a red and white striped hat, sits on the skin behind the ear. The design uses bold black outlines with simple flat fills of red and skin-toned areas. The photograph is taken close up from behind, showing only the ear and the hair, with a plain background.

The fair on Cordwell Bridge had swallowed the whole town by nine o'clock, and when the Harker girl went missing between the gingerbread stall and the bell ringers, the constable sent for Old Pim Ashworth, who had found every lost thing in the city for forty years. He came down the steps in his red and white striped hat, round spectacles pushed up on his forehead, and asked for nothing but a lantern and quiet.

Pim did not shout. He walked the crowd slowly, the way a man reads a page, looking at what people carried rather than at their faces. A cough sweet wrapper. A pair of mittens with one thumb. A dog lead with no dog on the end of it. Each time he stopped, the people around him stopped too, and somewhere behind the bunting a child began to hum the tune the bell ringers had been playing before the bells went quiet.
At the far end of the bridge, under the last working lamp, he found a blue ribbon tied to the railing, and beneath it a second ribbon, faded to grey, knotted in exactly the same way. The constable asked whose it was. Pim took his spectacles down and looked at the two of them for a long time before he answered.
"Mine," he said. "I tied it there the night I was lost, and nobody thought to look for me." Then he folded the lantern shut, went up the steps to the church porch, and found the Harker girl asleep on a hymn book with her mittens on the wrong hands.
