A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Maudlin Rose had been at sea for nineteen days when Haddow decided the teapot had to go. It hung on a gimballed hook above the galley stove, a dented enamel thing with a gold-rimmed spout and a face that someone's daughter had painted on years ago, so the crew called it Mabel and swore it could smell weather. You filled it at four each morning, and you had got into the habit of saying good morning to it before you said anything to the cook.

Haddow wanted a steel urn from a chandler's in Grimsby, one that didn't gossip and didn't leak. He unhooked Mabel on a grey afternoon off the Dogger Bank and set her on the chart table, where she rocked and went on grinning with her one blue-green eye. "Nothing wrong with her," he told nobody. "It's the principle." The urn was fitted by teatime, gleaming and sulky, and its first brew tasted of pennies.

By midnight the wind had backed north-east and the sea was running in short, vicious lumps. Then, from the locker where Haddow had stuffed the old pot in a sack of spare netting, came a clink, and another, steady as a knuckle on a table. You fetched her out. Her lid was chattering, and when you held her to the lamp the rosy cheek caught the light. You put the helm over on the strength of that, and an hour later the plotter showed a bank that the echo sounder had somehow missed.

Haddow poured his breakfast tea from the old pot and drank it standing, glaring at the urn. Mabel went back on her hook that afternoon, and the urn went into the hold with the spare rope. You still say good morning to her before anything else, and she goes on beaming over the steam, as if she has never once doubted it was her job.
