Cartoon character tattoo behind the ear

Neck · Colour · Photo

A small cartoon figure with round glasses, a smiling face, orange hair and a red and white striped hat and top is tattooed on the skin behind the ear. The design uses bold black outlines with flat areas of red, orange and white. The tattoo sits to the side of the frame, with the ear and hairline visible and a soft, plain background.

Brother Anselm has been squinting at the Psalter for three days, and you have been enjoying it. The great crowd scene fills the whole folio: fishermen, a bishop on a mule, twenty-six goats, a choir of lay sisters with their mouths open. Somewhere among them, no taller than a thumbnail, is the figure you painted at Prime on Tuesday while nobody was watching, with his round spectacles, his orange quiff and his red and white striped hat and jumper.

The abbot arrives at the scriptorium with a magnifying lens borrowed from the infirmary. He walks the length of the desk, muttering the names of the saints as if they might give him up. Brother Anselm offers him a cup of ale, then a second. You keep your head bent over the vellum, copying the litany of the dead in your neatest hand, and you do not look up when the abbot declares, loudly enough for the novices in the cloister to hear, that he will find the impostor before Compline.

By Sext the whole house is searching. The cellarer has counted the goats twice. The porter swears the bishop's mule has been moved. Nobody thinks to check the bottom corner, where the choir has its backs to the viewer, and where a small striped figure has tucked himself behind a goat and is grinning up at the ceiling.

On Vespers the abbot sets down his lens, laughs until he coughs, and finds you at once. He does not scold. He dips a pen, adds a tiny spectacled face beside yours, and asks, very politely, whether you might hide him next time.
