Nobody at Clewes Junction could remember when the signalman in the pink jumper first arrived, only that he had always been there, leaning out of his box with a thumb raised to the 6.40 as it rolled in under the iron roof. Ada Penhallow walked past him every morning for three winters with her eyes on her boots.

Then came the morning she had to speak to the stationmaster about her father's pension. The form was folded small in her fist, and at the window her words would not climb out of her. Her mouth opened and shut like a gate in the wind, and the clerk behind the glass began to look at his watch.

The signalman called down from the box. He did not shout. "Get confident, stupid," he said, and gave her the thumb again, grinning as though she had just told him a good joke. She laughed despite herself, and the laugh loosened the rest. She went in, said her piece plainly from start to finish, and came out with the rate she had been owed for eleven months.

On the Monday after, the box stood dark and the lever frame had been padlocked. Ada went down to the platform anyway, carrying the letter of thanks she had written to nobody in particular. Someone had chalked a small yellow thumb on the glass of the empty window, and she walked the length of the platform with her head up.
