Cartoon dinosaur on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon T-rex with a rounded head, open-mouthed grin, small raised arm and tail is drawn in a single black outline on the side of an ankle. The linework is even and clean with no shading, and the tattoo sits alone against plain pale skin with a dark background at the edge of the frame.

The night the T-rex got out of the poster, Mr Okonedo had his feet up on the staff kettle and was halfway through a custard cream when the little fellow came hopping across the tiles of the Hall of Deep Time as if he owned the lease. He was no bigger than a bread bin, all round head and no neck, with a grin wide enough to hold a whole Sunday dinner. Nobody had drawn him to be frightening. The sign above him said Meet Our Fearsome Friends, and the other fearsome friends were mostly skeletons with teeth like garden forks.

He wanted the cafe. Okonedo tried reason first, which is the wrong tool for a dinosaur. He tried a pastry, which bought him four seconds. Then the creature stood up on his back legs, raised one small arm as if asking a question in class, and walked straight into the gift shop, knocking a plush stegosaurus off the shelf with his tail.
By two in the morning they had visited the fossil preparation room, the sealed case of ammonites, and a recycling bin, which he seemed to enjoy most. Okonedo followed with a torch and a butterfly net, apologising to the exhibits under his breath. At the lift the creature stopped, looked back over his shoulder with that open-mouthed grin, and waited, the way you wait for someone slower than you.
They rode down to the foyer together. At the doors the little dinosaur turned, gave the arm one last wave, and strolled out into the wet car park towards the bus shelter as though he had a timetable. Okonedo wrote in the incident log: visitor escaped, returned by four, no damage except the stegosaurus. Under reason he wrote, wanted to go home. Every morning since, he has checked the poster in the hall, half expecting the grin to be missing.
