Pikachu rising from a Game Boy Color on a thigh

Other · Colour · Photo

A bright colour tattoo shows Pikachu leaping out of the screen of a Game Boy Color, with a Pokémon logo on the console and two pixel art figures, a trainer in a red cap and a yellow creature, along the bottom. Smooth shading and bold outlines define the characters, and the console is rendered in warm reds and oranges. A splash of orange and blue sits behind the device and Pikachu, framing the design against the skin.

Nan's caravan at Hollins Bay smelled of Germolene and wet dog, and the only thing worth taking from it that August was the orange handheld Dev had stuffed under a cushion. He had been told twice that it was for emergencies, which in our family meant a broken lolly stick or a row over the front seat. So he sat on the caravan step with his thumbs going and a bag of cheese puffs at his elbow, while the yellow mouse on the screen hopped about in a field of pixel grass.

Mum came out with a tea towel over her shoulder and said the sea was too cold for swimming, so he could either come in and lay the table or sit there hating the world. Dev chose the world. He had reached the bit where the little trainer in the red cap needed to cross a river with nothing but a bike and a grudge, and every time he got stuck, the mouse gave him a look like it knew exactly how useless he was being.

By teatime the battery had died. Dev held the dead thing up to the window and squinted at the faded logo as if it owed him money. Then he went rummaging under the sink, where Nan kept a biscuit tin full of odds and ends, and came back with two batteries that had gone soft at the ends, and a face like a man who had found treasure.

The screen flickered, then came back, and the mouse leapt out of it again. Out past the sea wall the sun dropped behind the cliffs and turned the water the colour of marmalade. Dev didn't say thank you to anybody. He just kept his thumbs moving, and Nan, who had no idea what any of it meant, pretended she didn't notice him wiping his eyes on his sleeve.
