Cartoon dog on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon dog with a shaggy, rounded body, drooping ears and a pink tongue is drawn in a single black outline. Soft grey shading sits along the ears and one side of the body, with a little pink on the tongue. The design is centred on a close-up of the lower leg and ankle, with plain skin around it.

The dog had been under the ice in the fish hold for two days before anyone thought to look, and by then he had eaten a whole box of kippers and was not sorry about it.

Skipper Ruth Garrow wanted him off at Lowestoft. She said so twice on the quay, once with her hands on her hips and once with a mug of tea in each fist, which for Ruth amounted to the same thing. But the dog had already claimed the wheelhouse step as his own, and when she turned to shout at the mate he sat up, shook the wet fringe out of his eyes and gave her a grin with a pink tongue hanging out one side. That ended the argument. We called him Mop, because that was what he looked like after every shake.
He never learned to keep out from under the trawl doors, and he never learned to stay out of the galley, but in March he learned to bark. The winch cable on the Constance Mary had been fraying for a week, which none of us had the nerve to report, and the dog stood at the rail with every hair on end, yapping at the drum until Ruth came up from her bunk in her socks. She got the crew clear with thirty seconds to spare. The cable snapped where we had been standing, and the cook, who had been certain it was a gull, bought Mop a new collar out of his own wages that same week.
Mop is in the logbook now, if you know where to look. Under the crew list, between the cook and the mate, there is a line in Ruth's square hand that reads: Dog aboard. Sound. I have never had the heart to ask her which of those two words she meant most.
