He simply arrived at the back of the barge at dusk, rested his forearms on the rim of the big peach cup she kept for guests, and waited for her to pour.

Her father had also said the old man owed him two hundred pounds and a boat hook, and she had never found either in writing. Tobias smiled through his beard, the grey strands lifting in the steam, and lifted the cup with both hands as though it weighed more than tea.

The barge drifted under the Hollins bridge while he drank. Lamps came on along the towpath. Nell waited for the talk about the lock keeper, or the rent, or the mooring she was sure he was planning to take. Instead he said, quite gently, "You've been sitting on the back step every evening since the funeral, lass. The tea doesn't need watching."

She sat down. He topped up her cup from the pot without asking, and the dark flower painted on the side of the cup turned slowly in the lamplight, its petals opening towards the water as if it had been waiting too.
