Tiny sushi tattoo beside the ear
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A very small tattoo of a sushi piece sits on the skin just behind the ear. It shows a dark seaweed wrap, a white rice band and two pink and orange fish slices on top, with simple outlines. The ear and blue and opal stud earrings fill the frame against dark hair, with soft, even lighting.

Dear Marguerite,

The nori went soft somewhere south of the Cape, and I have been fighting it ever since. Everything aboard smells of diesel and damp cardboard, but the rice holds if I keep it under a wet cloth. Captain Oyelaran says a roll shaped like a small black barrel with a white belt round its middle is bad luck on a ship, so I have started calling them lighthouses instead, and he eats three before he remembers to complain.
The fish is the problem. We lost the last of the salmon in Rotterdam, so I have been slicing tinned tuna thin enough to see the lamp through, then soaking it in soy and a little of the ginger from the pickle jar. Two pink slices and one orange, laid on top like the lids of a pair of eyes. Tomasz from the engine room came up to watch me do it and said nothing, which from him is praise.
Last night the sea turned and the galley tilted so far the rice tray slid into my lap. I sat on the floor and laughed until I had to hold the rail. When I finally got back to the board, I found one roll had survived, perfect and flattened on one side. I ate it standing over the sink, the way Papa used to eat bread after a shift.
We dock in Antwerp on Thursday. I will bring you the good rice, the kind that comes in a paper sack with a red crane on it, and I will make you the lighthouses properly, with fish that has never been in a tin.
Love, Dominic
