Cartoon girl in goggles with crossed-out lettering
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon girl with large dark eyes, red hair and a pair of goggles on her head is tattooed on the skin, with a blue and black shaded backdrop behind her. Two lines of block lettering run above and below her, each with a strike-through line across the words. The bold outlines and flat colour fills contrast with the soft skin tones of the limb in the photograph.

The notice is still pinned beside the boarding house bell, curling at the corners where the sea damp got in. Someone has drawn a girl at the top, goggles pushed up over a thatch of red hair, and someone else has run a firm line through the question. You read it twice before you ring. Mrs Pennock answers in a dressing gown the colour of wet sand, tells you the room is four pounds a night with breakfast, and says you are not the first to come asking.

She leads you up the stairs past a barometer stuck on Stormy. The room smells of brine and paraffin. On the windowsill sits a jar of sea glass and a pair of brass goggles, the lenses polished clean, as if somebody wore them to stare straight into weather. Mrs Pennock explains that the girl arrived in March on a motorbike with no petrol, paid three weeks in advance with a foreign coin, and left before the tide turned. The poster was her idea. The strike-throughs appeared in July, in red ink, the day the girl came back to collect a parcel addressed to nobody.
At dusk you walk the harbour wall with the notice folded in your coat. Gulls argue over chips. A lone figure sits on the bollard at the far end, swinging her boots, her hair the colour of a warning flag. You stop. She doesn't look up. "Took you long enough," she says, and taps the goggles on her head. "I crossed out the question. You were the answer all along."
