The tattoo shows the cartoon character My Melody, with a long red hood, a white face and body, and a wreath of small green and pink flowers on the head. The character is centred in the frame, with a small red heart-like motif near the lower left and red polka-dot fabric filling the background.

The ovens were already ticking when you hauled the shutters up at half four, and Mrs Okafor had left a note on the flour bin in capitals: THE RED BOXES ARE FOR ST AGNES. DO NOT TOUCH THE POLKA DOT TIN. You had no idea what the polka dot tin held until you lifted its lid and found forty little red hoods stacked like bells, each one stitched with a wreath of sugar flowers, pale green and pink, gone soft in the damp.

Inside the lid was a sticker of a white bunny with its ears folded down under the hood, grinning up at you as if it knew something. Someone had drawn it on the back of a delivery docket years ago, and Mrs Okafor had pinned that docket above the proving cupboard ever since. Nobody at the shop would say who made the first batch of hoods. You suspected her, the spring her husband went to Lagos and didn't come back for a year, sewing to keep her hands busy while the dough rose.
By five the window had turned from black to the colour of weak tea. You rewired the flowers one stem at a time, the way she had shown you, and when the first van pulled up outside you carried the boxes out with both arms, the hood of a red bell brushing your chin at every step.
The driver peered at the lid and asked what the bunny was called. You said you didn't know, which was true. He said his daughter would know, and you thought of the small red heart Mrs Okafor stamped on the base of every box, and you said it didn't matter, because it was for the church, and it was.
