Cartoon unicorn with lettering on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon unicorn with large dark eyes, rosy cheeks and a pastel mane in pink, teal and red stands on the upper arm, with small red hooves and a bow on its tail. Below it, teal script reads Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, cut off at the edge of the frame, with scattered pink and teal sparkles around the design. The bold outlines and soft shading give it a playful, retro look, set against a pink patterned background.

The pony came back in the bottom of Mrs Halloran's trunk, wrapped in a bath towel that still smelt of the Seaholly laundry. I knew it was hers before I unrolled it. Nobody else in Hollin Bay owned a unicorn with lashes like a doll's, and nobody else booked room four every August, asked for the window facing the sea, then forgot every September what she had come to forget.

She had left the pony on the sill the summer before, with a note in her neat hand that said only, Don't let me take this home. I put it in the drawer and didn't ask. Lodgers leave things: library books, a mustard-coloured glove, once a set of false teeth in a biscuit tin. But the pony had its mane painted pink and teal and a red like jam, and each time I dusted past it the sparkles caught the light off the bay as if someone had flicked salt at the wallpaper.
When she came down the stairs on her last morning, she stopped in the hall and frowned at the carpet as though it owed her money. "Edie, have I stayed here before?" I said yes, every August for nine years. She nodded slowly, the way people do when they are being polite to a stranger, and I handed her the towel. She unrolled the pony, turned it over twice, and smiled at its bow. "Somebody's been looking after this," she said, and tucked it under her arm without asking whose it was.
I carried her case to the gate and watched the bus climb the hill. Then I went back up to room four and set the pony on the sill again, where the first light off the water would reach it before anything else in the house woke up.
