Castle tattoo on the ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A detailed castle with tall spires and arched windows sits on the ankle, set on a shaded rocky base. The castle is rendered in black and grey with fine linework and soft shading across the stonework. Above it, a banner reads IRON MIKE in black lettering, and a small patch of pink and red watercolour-style ink sits at the side of the ankle.

The flour was still hanging in the air when the old oven started ticking, which meant it was ten to four and I had a castle to finish. Iron Mike had been bolted into the back wall since before my father bought the lease, a black iron brute the previous baker used to slap and swear at. Nobody else could get a decent crust out of it, and I'd stopped arguing with it years ago.

The order was a christening cake, three tiers, and the mother had sketched the design on the back of a receipt: a grey castle with spires like sharpened pencils, perched on a crag of rock, every window arched. I'd spent two nights on the spires alone, piping sugar paste over wire, and they kept leaning like drunks outside a pub. The rock was easy. Rock forgives you. You just dust it with cocoa and let it be uneven.
By half four the spires finally stood straight. The windows were the hard part, each arch no wider than a fingernail, and my hands were shaking from too much coffee. Then the back door opened and Dad came in with the van keys in his fist, took one look at the cake, and said nothing for a long time.
"Your nan would have made it taller," he said at last. Then he reached past me, took the finest brush from the jar, and painted a small red flag on the highest spire. Outside, the sky over the car park was going the colour of weak tea, and Iron Mike ticked and settled as it cooled.
