Cactus outline tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cactus is drawn in a single dark outline on the lower leg, just above the ankle. The linework is thin and even, with short spine marks along both arms of the plant and no shading or fill. The photograph is black and white and shows the leg from behind, with a pair of white sneakers and a wooden floor in the background.

Mabel Corran bought the cactus from a stall in Wakefield market because the man selling it swore it would outlive the boat. She didn't believe him, but she carried it aboard anyway, wedged between a coil of rope and a tin of paraffin, and by the second lock it had been knocked against the tiller twice.

The narrowboat was called Patience, a name the previous owner had painted along the side in gold leaf that was already flaking. Mabel had owned it six weeks. She could work the lock gates now and back into a turning point without shouting at the towpath. What she had not learned was how to keep anything alive that didn't want watering, and the cactus, with its ridged arms and fine grey spines, seemed to take a quiet pleasure in being forgotten on the back deck.
At Stanley Ferry a lock-keeper's girl, Rosie, leaned on the gate and asked why anyone would keep something so prickly. Mabel said she didn't keep it so much as it kept her. Then, because the child looked unconvinced, she fetched a jam jar, cut the smallest offshoot with a bread knife, and let it dry on the windowsill for three days before planting it in the grit.
Rosie came back every Saturday to check on it. By autumn the pup had two arms of its own, and Mabel stopped worrying about the watering. "It never needed us," Rosie said, pressing a thumb to a spine. "That's why it's the best one on the canal." Mabel agreed, though she privately thought the girl had it the wrong way round.
