Black and grey fine line tattoo of a cat outline curling around a heart with a filled black paw print inside, on a calf.

Cat and paw print in a heart on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cat outline with its head and ears merging into the top right of a heart outline. Inside the heart, a solid black paw print with four toe pads and a main pad sits on a clear background. The linework is a single consistent grey-black outline, with the paw print filled in solid black, and the design is centred on a smooth, pale area of skin in a greyscale photo.

The frost had come down hard overnight, and Dilys Harker was out before the milk lorry with a bucket of pellets and a torch that was losing its nerve. The barn cat had been missing since Tuesday. Her father would have said it had gone off to die in a hedge, the way they did, but he had been dead four winters and she no longer argued with him in the yard.

At the feed shed door she stopped. Across the white concrete ran a line of prints, small and neat, four toes and a fat pad at the heel, heading from the hay bales to the gate. They were fresh. Behind them, where the cat had sat and turned on the frost, the mark of its tail had made a soft curve, and the curve and the prints together made a shape she recognised from the biscuit tin her mother kept sewing things in: a heart with something leaning over its top edge.

She followed them down the lane, past the ash tree where the ewes crowded under the wall, past the stone trough gone to slush at the lip. The prints wandered and doubled back and then ran straight, the way they did when something had decided. At the old pig arc on the far side of the beck, they stopped. Tansy sat on the iron roof in the thin sun, grey as the sky, washing one foreleg with great seriousness, and did not look up when Dilys called her name.

Dilys set the bucket down on the frosted grass. "You daft article," she said, and her breath hung between them. The cat finished the leg, then the other, then stood and stretched until its spine made a bow. It jumped down soft as dropped wool and walked back toward the house without waiting, tail up, leaving her to follow the marks it made in the white.
