Cat reaching for yarn on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A continuous black outline shows a cat stretching up with one paw raised towards a ball of yarn with a trailing thread. The linework is thin and even, with no shading in the cat, while the yarn ball is filled with lilac and grey tones. The design sits diagonally across the forearm on pale skin against a wooden surface.

Dear Marguerite,

Three in the morning and the ovens are roaring like a train that has forgotten where it is going. You'll be pleased to hear the cat has finally learned the trick of the dough hook, though not in the way Mr Okafor intended. Tibs spent Tuesday sitting on the proving shelf like a loaf that had got above itself, and nobody could shift her until the bread was in.
The yarn is the real trouble. Mrs Pryce from the flat above left a ball of lilac wool on the back step to be collected, and it has been rolling about the prep room ever since. This morning I found a thread running from the ball all the way under the bench, out past the cooling racks, and up the leg of the flour sacks. Tibs had stretched herself out along the whole length of it, one paw lifted, batting at the loose end as if she meant to hook a fish out of the sink.
I laughed so hard I had to sit on a crate. Then I did the sensible thing and wound the wool back up, tightly, and set it on the windowsill where she can see it but not reach. She watched me do it with those narrow eyes, the way she watches the clock on the wall, as if she knows exactly how long she has to wait.
Dawn comes in grey over the car park, and the first loaves are cracking on the rack. I have left the lilac ball where she can see it. I suspect by six there will be a fresh line of thread across the floor, and I suspect I will not mind at all.
Yours in flour, Hetty
