Cat face on the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's face is shown front-on, with pointed ears, striped markings and three blank circles, two for eyes and one lower down at the centre. The design uses a bold outline with fine hatching and cross-hatching to shade the fur, in black ink and grey tones only. The tattoo is centred on the back of the hand, with the fingers curled towards the bottom of the frame against a dark background.

Mizzen came aboard at Cardiff with a bad leg and a worse opinion of the mate, and by the time we raised the Azores she had decided the ship belonged to her. Nobody argued. She slept on the coiled hawser by the galley door and walked the rail at four bells as if she were counting us in.

Cook called her a bad omen the first week out, because she would not eat the fish heads and sat staring at the empty sea off the stern. The bosun said she was only waiting for the weather to turn, and he was right, though it took three days of grey and a wind that set the rigging singing like a wet finger round a glass before it did.

The night the foresail split, I found her on the forecastle hatch with her ears flat and her eyes wide open, two pale rounds in the dark, and a third mark I had never noticed, a small blank circle set low on her face as though someone had pressed a thumb into the ink. She was looking past me at the black water where the lamp could not reach. Then she stood, shook herself, and walked aft to the wheel. We put the helm over where she had turned her head, and the swell that would have broached us went under the keel instead.

I have never believed in signs, and I do not now, but when we docked at Bristol the bosun asked what I had seen that night. I said nothing. He nodded as if that were the answer he had been hoping for.
