Brother Anselm had kept the infirmary at Saint Oswin's for thirty-one winters, and in all that time nobody had ever brought him a syringe held by a cat. The cat arrived on a Tuesday, pinned to the lid of a biscuit tin, wearing a nurse's cap with a red heart on the front and a blue bow tied beneath its ears, as if it had come straight from the wards of some far brighter place.

"It was in the offertory box," said Brother Piers, who had carried it up the cloister steps like a relic. "Under the candles. Nobody claims it."
Anselm turned the tin in the thin light from the window. The cat's face was white and round, with no mouth at all, only a whisker on each side and a small orange nose, and it held a green syringe as neatly as a deacon holds a censer. He thought of the old infirmarian's rule: a patient must be told the truth before any needle goes in. He had no truth to offer it, so he told it nothing and set the tin on the shelf beside the tincture of arnica.
Three nights later the fever came up the dormitory stairs, two novices were sick with it, and the rota was in disarray. In the morning Anselm found the blue dress folded on the chair, the white apron starched and the cap pinned straight, and a line of careful dots on the sickbed linen where something small had been counting pulses. Nobody confessed. Piers swore he had slept through it. Anselm only checked the boys' wrists, found them cool, and left the tin on the shelf where it could keep an eye on things.
