White cat portrait in an ornate frame with roses

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A white cat with dark eyes and soft shading fills an oval area at the centre of the design, set within a black and grey ornate frame. A pale pink oval sits behind the cat, and pink and red roses with green leaves frame the lower corners. Bold outlines and rich, saturated colour contrast with the greyscale shading on the frame and cat fur.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every morning before the bakers' bell, Mrs Pell's white cat walked the length of the bakehouse with its tail held straight up, and every morning the apprentice Tom swore it was counting the loaves. The cat did not care for Tom. It cared for the oval looking glass above the flour bins, framed in black iron scrollwork, which nobody had polished since the old baker's wife died.

One February the frost came early and the ovens ran cold. Tom knelt at the mouth of the oven with the shovel, and the cat sat in the frame of the glass, very still, its eyes two black coins. When Tom asked it what it wanted, it only blinked. In the glass he saw the pink glow of the proving room behind him, and red roses that had not been there the day before, climbing the iron on either side.

He understood then that the cat had been keeping the dough all along. He raked the coals, fed the fire with split ash, and worked the starter until the crust came up gold. The cat stepped down from the frame and washed its face on the sill.

By the time the carts came, the glass held only Tom's own tired face and a little frost. The widow Pell took one loaf from the rack and said nothing. Every dawn after, Tom set the first loaf on the sill for the white cat. It was never once eaten, and never once thrown out either.
