Cat head with UFO and beach scene

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cat head outline frames a scene with a starry purple sky, crescent moon, clouds, palm trees and a beach with an umbrella, surfboard and cats. A green tractor beam rises from a flying saucer to a black cat floating above the sand, and paw prints lead down the beam. Bold black outlines sit against saturated greens, teals, oranges and purples with soft shading in the sky, and the design is centred on the leg.

Nobody on Gull Cove believed Mrs Ottoline Dray when she said her cat had been taken up by a saucer, least of all her husband, who had spent thirty years doubting anything she said before breakfast. So she went down to the sea wall that August with a tin of sardines and waited, with no expectation at all and a very firm grip on the tin.

The saucer came in low over the bay on a Tuesday, pale green and humming like a fridge left on in an empty kitchen. Pilchard, who was black as a bin bag and had never once in nine years been where he was supposed to be, sat on the wall and watched it with the bored interest of a cat who has seen everything. The beam came down and lifted him up very politely, one paw at a time, as if he were being helped onto a coach by someone who had read the leaflet.

He came back on the Friday. Mrs Dray found him asleep on the sand below the wall, wrapped in a purple striped towel that did not belong to anyone on the cove, with a sunburnt nose and grains of something sparkly caught between his toes. The paw prints ran from the sand straight up into the sky as far as she could see, neat as stitches, and they were still there when the tide came in.

Her husband refused to look at them. The neighbour's tabby now crosses the road to avoid their gate. Mrs Dray leaves sardines on the wall every evening anyway, just in case the saucer is running late.
