The Duke of Ashgrove had been dead three weeks when the cat began to take his place at dinner. Nobody at Merrow Hall thought to object. Mrs Pargeter laid a saucer for him beside the silver, and the cat, a brown tom of enormous dignity and a face like a disappointed magistrate, sat upright on the chair with his red bow tie knotted tight under his chin as if the Duke had left it there on purpose.

The new solicitor from Leeds arrived on a wet Tuesday with the will in a leather case. He read it aloud in the drawing room while the cat watched him over the rim of a teacup, unimpressed. The bequest was simple. The house, the gardens, the orchard and the sum of four thousand pounds went to Thomas Ashgrove, nephew, who was not present. The cat was named as sole executor.

There was a silence. The solicitor cleared his throat. Mrs Pargeter began to cry quietly into a tea towel. The cat stood, stretched one paw towards the open window where the late summer roses had gone to seed, and walked out across the lawn with his tail held high, flowers nodding in his wake like a procession that had been told to wait for him.

By Friday the nephew had come, found the house locked, and gone back to London with a flea in his ear and nothing in his hand. The cat was seen sitting on the garden wall with the ledger open beside him, a pen balanced between his front paws, and the first thing he signed was a cheque for the village hall roof.
