Cat watching ladybirds on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A simple black outline of a sitting cat looks upward at a trail of five red ladybirds rising diagonally above it. The cat is drawn with thin, unshaded linework and is left largely white, while the ladybirds have black outlines, black spots and red fills. The tattoo sits on the skin of a lower leg against a dark background, with the cat in the lower half of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy had been on the wall since breakfast, and by eleven she had decided the ladybirds were showing off. Five of them had come up out of the cabbages after the rain, red as postboxes, and they were climbing the air in a crooked line towards the washing line as though someone had promised them a view. The cat did not chase. Chasing was for dogs and for cats with nothing better to do, and Mrs Abernethy had a great deal to do, most of it sitting perfectly still.

The trouble was the greenfly. Half the street's roses had gone grey with them, and the ladybirds had been drifting off in ones and twos for a week, leaving the cabbages to the caterpillars. Now they were heading for the old chapel roof across the lane, where Mr Okonkwo's sweet peas had come up through the guttering. Mrs Abernethy knew this because she had watched it from the windowsill, and because nobody else in Thorne Lane was looking up.

She climbed down at teatime. It took some doing, the wall was higher than it had been last spring, and by the time she reached the lane the ladybirds had gathered on the chapel gutter like a tiny fire brigade. One of them, the smallest, peeled off and landed on the end of her nose. Mrs Abernethy went cross-eyed trying to look at it, and then, for once in her life, she did not move at all. The others went on climbing, and she let them.

She walked home at dusk with a red speck on her whiskers, which she did not mention to anyone. The cabbages, she supposed, could look after themselves.
